Sony Secures TV Rights for India-Afghanistan T20Is

Sony Sports Network has secured the television broadcasting rights for India’s upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, adding another major cricket property to its portfolio. The series will be hosted by the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) and is scheduled to take place at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

The three matches are currently set for September 13, 15 and 17, with the schedule having received formal approval from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). While Sony will broadcast the matches on television, digital streaming rights will be available with FanCode.

The ITW Universe, which holds the global rights for the series, finalised Sony as the television rights holder after discussions with other interested broadcasters, including JioStar and Zee Unite8. A senior official from ITW Universe confirmed the development.

ACB Asked to Consider Ganesh Chaturthi Match

Alongside the broadcasting announcement, the ACB has received a request to modify the schedule so that one of the three matches can be played on September 14, coinciding with Ganesh Chaturthi.

ITW Universe founder Bhairav Shanth has written to ACB CEO Naseeb Khan, asking the board to consider moving one fixture to the festival day. He suggested two possible scheduling combinations that would keep the series within a compact window.

The preferred option proposed by ITW includes matches on September 11, 13 and 14, while an alternative would see games played on September 13, 14 and either September 16 or 17.

Shanth described Ganesh Chaturthi as one of India’s most widely celebrated and emotionally important festivals. He believes hosting a match on the occasion could create a special connection between the Afghanistan Cricket Board and Indian cricket fans.

According to the request, such a gesture would also highlight the cultural relationship between the two countries and strengthen the goodwill surrounding the BCCI-ACB partnership.

For now, the officially approved schedule remains September 13, 15 and 17. Any change will depend on the ACB’s decision and further coordination with the relevant stakeholders.
