PCB Issues Show-Cause Notices to Selectors Over Imam, Rizwan Selection
Pakistan cricket has been thrown into fresh turmoil after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) issued show-cause notices to members of its selection committee, seeking an explanation for the inclusion of Imam-ul-Haq and Mohammad Rizwan in squads for the recent tours of the West Indies and England.
According to reports, the selectors have been given 24 hours to explain the basis and rationale behind picking the two players. The committee includes several former Pakistan cricketers, including Aaqib Javed, Misbah-ul-Haq, Sarfaraz Ahmed and Asad Shafiq.
The PCB has reportedly asked the selectors to provide details of the selection criteria, player performances and other factors considered before making their decisions. A PCB spokesperson confirmed on Tuesday that notices had been issued to the selection committee.
The development comes at a turbulent time for Pakistan cricket. Just a day earlier, the PCB made sweeping changes to the Babar Azam-led squad currently touring England. Following Pakistan’s 194-run defeat at Lord’s, seven players were reportedly released from the touring squad and asked to return home.
Imam-ul-Haq and Mohammad Rizwan were among the players whose selections have now come under scrutiny. Salman Ali Agha, Ali Usman, Aamir Jamal, Muhammad Awais Zafar and Khurram Shahzad were also among the players asked to leave the England tour. New players are expected to replace them for the third and final Test, scheduled to begin on September 9 in Birmingham.
The situation has become even more complicated amid reports that Misbah-ul-Haq has resigned from the selection committee, although his resignation has reportedly not yet been accepted by the PCB.
The PCB’s decision to directly question the judgement of its selectors in specific player selections is unusual in international cricket. Selection committees are generally given the responsibility to evaluate form, fitness, team balance and long-term planning.
Pakistan cricket, however, has a long history of dramatic selection controversies and administrative intervention. The latest move highlights the pressure surrounding the national team following disappointing performances.
With Pakistan preparing for the final Test against England, attention will now be focused not only on the team’s performance but also on the growing uncertainty surrounding the selection committee and the PCB’s next steps.
