Rescuers in Nepal Find Two More People Alive After Flash Flood Disaster
Emergency responders in Nepal have rescued two more people alive as search operations continue 10 days after devastating flash floods struck the country. A Chinese man trapped inside a hydropower tunnel and a 64-year-old Nepali woman buried inside a damaged home were found in two separate rescue operations, offering rare moments of hope amid a disaster that has left thousands dead or missing.
According to Nepal’s military, a joint rescue team involving army personnel and South Korean disaster experts successfully rescued the Chinese man from a 225-metre tunnel at the Upper Trishuli-1 hydropower project. Images released by authorities showed the survivor being carried out of the tunnel before being evacuated by helicopter for a medical assessment.
Rescue teams have concentrated much of their efforts on hydropower projects across Nepal, where approximately 900 workers remain missing. Authorities believe around 500 of them may be trapped inside large underground tunnels. International teams from India, China, South Korea and the United States have joined Nepalese responders in searching damaged facilities, tunnels and surrounding debris for possible survivors.
The latest rescue came after two Nepali workers were pulled alive from another tunnel at a hydro station on the Trishuli River a day earlier. However, experts have warned that the chances of finding more survivors are becoming increasingly limited as time passes.
In another dramatic operation, rescuers discovered a 64-year-old Nepali woman inside a badly damaged house in the flood-hit town of Nuwakot. Photographs released by the Nepali army showed the woman partially submerged in thick mud before emergency workers pulled her to safety. She was later airlifted to Kathmandu for medical treatment as police and rescue personnel celebrated the successful operation.
The catastrophic floods were triggered by a glacial and rock collapse on August 26, causing widespread destruction across Nepal. Rescue work has been made even more difficult by severe damage to roads and infrastructure, with more than 40 bridges reportedly destroyed and rivers continuing to swell unpredictably.
According to Nepal’s disaster management agency, at least 1,375 people have died in the floods, while more than 5,000 remain missing. As international rescue teams continue their search, the discovery of survivors after 10 days has provided a powerful reminder that hope remains, even as the window for successful rescues continues to narrow.
