Naveen-ul-Haq is set to make his return to international cricket after a lengthy injury layoff, with Afghanistan naming him in their 15-member squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against India in Delhi. The series, scheduled for September 13, 15 and 17, will also mark Ibrahim Zadran’s first assignment as Afghanistan’s T20I captain.
For Naveen, the selection represents an important step in his comeback. The 26-year-old fast bowler has spent a considerable period away from the international game because of a shoulder injury. The problem ruled him out of the Asia Cup last year and the T20 World Cup earlier this year. He subsequently underwent surgery for a stress fracture in his right shoulder.
Naveen last represented Afghanistan in December 2024. He has already retired from ODI cricket following the 2023 World Cup, making his return to the T20I setup particularly significant for Afghanistan’s plans in the shortest format. His ability to bowl variations and handle pressure at the death could provide the team with an experienced option against a strong Indian batting lineup.
Afghanistan have also recalled experienced allrounder Gulbadin Naib. His return adds depth to both the middle order and bowling attack and gives the new-look squad another proven international performer.
The selectors have rewarded domestic form as well. Uncapped wicketkeeper Noor Rahman has earned a place as the backup to Rahmanullah Gurbaz after impressing in domestic cricket and the Shpageeza Cricket League.
The squad also contains considerable spin strength. Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, Noor Ahmad and Nangyal Kharoti are among the four specialist spin options, while Mujeeb Ur Rahman also provides additional variety. Fazalhaq Farooqi, Azmatullah Omarzai and Abdullah Ahmadzai strengthen the pace resources.
With Ibrahim Zadran taking charge and Naveen returning from injury, Afghanistan will enter the series with a blend of youth, experience and fresh leadership. The three T20Is against India could therefore offer Naveen an important opportunity to rebuild his international career while helping Afghanistan prepare for their upcoming challenges in the shortest format.
