Marnus Labuschagne Dropped from Australia ODI Squads
Published On:
Marnus Labuschagne has been left out of Australia’s ODI squads for the upcoming tours of Zimbabwe and South Africa as the selectors continue to reshape the team ahead of next year’s World Cup. The decision follows a difficult period for the experienced batter, who has struggled to produce consistent performances across formats.
Labuschagne’s recent ODI numbers played a major role in his omission. During Australia’s tour of Pakistan, he managed just 24 runs across three matches. His form did not improve significantly against Bangladesh in Mirpur, where he registered only one half-century in the three-match ODI series. He also endured a lean run in the recently concluded two-match home Test series against Bangladesh.
With senior players Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head returning to the ODI setup, the selectors opted to move forward with a combination of established performers and younger talent. Australia’s chair of selectors, George Bailey, described the six-match campaign in Zimbabwe and South Africa as an important preparation period for next year’s World Cup, which will also be staged in those countries.
The squads provide fresh opportunities for promising youngsters Joel Davies and Ollie Peake. Davies impressed on his T20I debut against Bangladesh, claiming figures of 3 for 17, and could now be in contention for his first ODI appearance. Left-handed batter Peake has retained his place after making his ODI debut against Pakistan earlier this year.
Australia have also received a major boost with Josh Hazlewood returning for both legs of the tour. Captain Pat Cummins and fast bowler Mitchell Starc will join the squad for the South Africa leg ahead of the three-match Test series. Mitchell Marsh will lead Australia during the Zimbabwe portion before Cummins takes over after linking up with the team.
The selection underlines Australia’s intention to build a strong and flexible ODI unit ahead of the World Cup. Players such as Xavier Bartlett, Cooper Connolly, Cameron Green, Nathan Ellis, Adam Zampa and Spencer Johnson will have the opportunity to strengthen their positions during the upcoming matches.
For Labuschagne, the omission represents another setback in a challenging phase of his career. However, with the World Cup still ahead, strong performances in domestic cricket and future international opportunities could help him force his way back into Australia’s plans.
