India and Japan are set to create a new chapter in cricket history as the men’s teams of the two nations prepare to face each other in a historic one-off T20 International on September 22. The match, announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), will be the first-ever international cricket fixture between India and Japan.

The landmark contest will be played at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. Beyond the sporting significance of the fixture, the match will also form part of the celebrations marking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Japan.

According to the BCCI, the game will launch “Sport 75”, an initiative aimed at promoting human exchanges and strengthening cooperation between the two countries through sports. The initiative follows discussions held between the leadership of India and Japan and also aligns with India’s long-term ambition to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2036.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia described the fixture as a significant moment for cricket. He said the match would take the Indian team into new territory while offering an opportunity to introduce the sport to a wider audience in Japan and across East Asia.

Saikia also highlighted the importance of expanding cricket beyond its traditional strongholds. As the world’s largest cricket board, the BCCI believes it has a responsibility to contribute to the global growth of the game. The Indian board plans to work closely with the Japan Cricket Association to strengthen the sport’s development in the country and build a lasting relationship.

Japan Cricket Association CEO Naoki Miyaji welcomed the opportunity to host the reigning world champions, calling it a landmark occasion for Japanese cricket. He expressed gratitude to the BCCI for helping make the historic fixture possible and encouraged local Japanese fans to experience the excitement of international cricket.

The India vs Japan T20I is expected to attract significant attention from cricket followers in both countries. For India, it represents an opportunity to take the game to a relatively new international destination. For Japan, hosting one of world cricket’s biggest teams could provide a major boost to the sport’s popularity and future development.

With diplomacy, cultural exchange and cricket coming together, September 22 promises to be a memorable day as India and Japan meet for the first time on the international cricket field.
