India-Pakistan Clash Reserved for Asian Games Medals

The India-Pakistan rivalry is set to take on extra significance at the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, with the two teams unable to meet during the early stages of the men’s or women’s cricket competitions. If the arch-rivals do face each other, the encounter will be for a medal, adding even greater pressure and excitement to one of cricket’s biggest rivalries.

The Asian Games will be held from September 19 to October 4, while the cricket competition will run from September 17 to October 3. The tournament will be played in the T20 format at Paloma Mizuho Stadium in Nagoya.

In the men’s competition, India and Pakistan are among the four teams seeded directly into the quarterfinals, alongside Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. India have been placed in Quarterfinal 2, while Pakistan will play Quarterfinal 1. Both quarterfinals are scheduled for September 28, with their opponents coming from the group stage.

The semifinal draw means India and Pakistan have been placed on opposite sides of the bracket. If India win their quarterfinal, they are expected to face the winner of Quarterfinal 3 in the semifinal on October 1. Pakistan, meanwhile, will meet the winner of Quarterfinal 4 if they progress from their quarterfinal.

As a result, India and Pakistan can meet only in the gold-medal match or the bronze-medal play-off, both scheduled for October 3. There is also no guarantee that the highly anticipated contest will take place, as either team could be eliminated before reaching those matches.

The women’s competition follows a similar pattern. India are the top-seeded team and will face Japan in their quarterfinal. A semifinal victory would put them against either Bangladesh or Hong Kong, China. Pakistan, seeded fourth, will meet Thailand before potentially facing Sri Lanka or Malaysia.

Therefore, a women’s India-Pakistan encounter can also happen only in the final or bronze-medal match on September 22.

Afghanistan, Nepal, Hong Kong, China, Japan, Malaysia and Oman will compete in the men’s group stage. India’s men’s team will be led by Shreyas Iyer, while Harmanpreet Kaur will captain the women’s side.

With medals potentially at stake, an India-Pakistan clash in Nagoya could become one of the most anticipated moments of the Asian Games cricket tournament.
