India Cricket Review Meeting: Rohit Sharma’s Future in Focus
Published On:
Indian cricket is set for an important review meeting in Mumbai as some of the biggest names in the country’s cricket administration prepare to discuss recent performances and future plans. The meeting, scheduled ahead of the BCCI Annual General Meeting, is expected to bring together head coach Gautam Gambhir, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, Centre of Excellence head VVS Laxman and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia.
A major point of discussion will be India’s recent performances across formats. The team’s outings in Ireland and England, particularly in white-ball cricket, are likely to come under close scrutiny after a disappointing run. Despite entering the period as T20 World Cup champions, India failed to register a victory in any of the six completed T20 internationals played during the Ireland and England assignments.
India Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill has also reportedly been invited to attend the meeting in person. His presence highlights the importance of involving the captaincy group in planning upcoming tours and reviewing recent series. Shreyas Iyer, India’s T20I captain, is also expected to be part of the discussions, either physically or virtually.
However, the biggest talking point could be Rohit Sharma’s future. Recent reports suggested that selectors were considering moving on from Rohit ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup, with speculation even surrounding whether a recent ODI could have been his last. The BCCI, however, quickly denied those reports, creating uncertainty over the veteran’s long-term role in the Indian team.
The Mumbai meeting could provide greater clarity on that situation. India’s upcoming tour of New Zealand, featuring five T20Is, five ODIs and two Tests, will also be discussed as the team prepares for another demanding international challenge.
Long-term planning for the 2027 ODI World Cup and India’s position in the ongoing World Test Championship cycle will form another important part of the agenda. There has also been speculation regarding Ajit Agarkar’s future and whether VVS Laxman could take on a larger role with the senior Indian side.
With the BCCI AGM approaching, the meeting carries significant importance. The discussions could shape India’s selection strategy, leadership structure and preparations for the next major phase of international cricket.
