Bethell Ruled Out as England Recall Pope, Carse and Lawrence for Pakistan Tests

England have announced a refreshed 16-man squad for the opening two Tests of their three-match home series against Pakistan, with Jacob Bethell ruled out because of a knee injury. His absence has opened the door for the return of Ollie Pope, Brydon Carse and Dan Lawrence, while Jordan Cox is set to take over the crucial No. 3 batting position.

Bethell suffered a right knee injury during England’s ODI series against India and has been ruled out of the entire Pakistan Test series. The young all-rounder’s absence is a setback, but England have responded by recalling experienced players to strengthen the squad ahead of an important World Test Championship contest.

Dan Lawrence makes his first Test appearance in two years after enjoying an outstanding County Championship season with Surrey. Currently among the leading run-scorers in Division One, Lawrence is expected to bat at No. 6. His inclusion also allows wicketkeeper Jamie Smith to move down to No. 7 after spending time higher up the order against New Zealand.

Jordan Cox, who made his Test debut against New Zealand earlier this summer, has earned the responsibility of batting at No. 3. England’s selectors believe the talented batter is ready to fill the vacancy left by Bethell and establish himself in the middle order.

The squad also welcomes back Ollie Pope and fast bowler Brydon Carse, both returning after missing recent Test assignments. Pope had been left out following inconsistent performances with the bat, while Carse had been recovering from injury. Sam Cook has also earned a recall after making his Test debut against Zimbabwe last year.

England’s squad reflects a blend of youth and experience as they begin a new chapter following Ben Stokes’ retirement from international cricket. Joe Root returns as the full-time Test captain, leading the side for the first time since stepping down in 2022. Meanwhile, Marcus Trescothick will serve as interim head coach for the Pakistan series before Stephen Fleming officially takes charge later this year.

The first Test begins on August 19 at Headingley, followed by the second at Lord’s on August 27 and the final Test at Edgbaston on September 9. With England currently seventh and Pakistan eighth in the World Test Championship standings, the series carries significant importance for both teams as they look to improve their position.
