Auqib Nabi Earns Maiden India Test Call-Up for Sri Lanka Series

India have handed a maiden Test call-up to Jammu and Kashmir fast bowler Auqib Nabi, who replaces Jasprit Bumrah in the squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. Bumrah has been ruled out after failing to recover fully from the left knee injury he suffered during the ODI series against England, creating an opportunity for one of domestic cricket’s most consistent performers.

The 29-year-old right-arm pacer has enjoyed a remarkable rise through the domestic circuit. Over the past two Ranji Trophy seasons, Nabi has claimed an outstanding 104 wickets, including 60 wickets in the 2025-26 season, playing a decisive role in Jammu and Kashmir’s historic maiden Ranji Trophy triumph. His ability to generate movement with the new ball and maintain relentless accuracy has made him one of India’s most dependable red-ball bowlers.

Nabi’s impressive domestic performances also earned him a place in the India A squad for the recent tour of Sri Lanka. He continued his excellent form by taking six wickets in two four-day matches against Sri Lanka A, including a brilliant 4 for 58 in the first innings of the opening game. Those performances convinced the selectors that he is ready for the challenges of international Test cricket.

Meanwhile, Bumrah’s absence remains a significant concern for India. The star pacer has been carefully managed since suffering a back injury during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. He was expected to return for the Sri Lanka series after undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, but his recovery from the knee injury has taken longer than anticipated.

India will now rely on their pace attack to fill the void left by Bumrah while giving Nabi an opportunity to prove himself at the highest level. The Sri Lanka series could mark the beginning of an exciting international career for the Jammu and Kashmir speedster if he continues the form that has made him one of the standout performers in domestic cricket.

The Indian Test squad will be led by Shubman Gill, with KL Rahul serving as vice-captain. Young batter Sai Sudharsan has also retained his place in the squad, subject to receiving fitness clearance. The two-Test series offers India another chance to build momentum while rewarding consistent domestic performers with opportunities on the international stage.
