Abishek Porel Arrested in Sexual Assault Case

Bengal and Delhi Capitals cricketer Abishek Porel has been arrested in connection with a sexual assault case following an order from the Calcutta High Court. The wicketkeeper-batter was taken into custody by Hooghly police on Monday night and was subsequently produced before a court on Tuesday, August 11. He has been remanded to three days of police custody.

According to the complaint, a medical student accused Porel of sexual assault and alleged that he had exploited her after promising to marry her. The complaint was filed on June 23 at Mogra Police Station in Hooghly. The woman reportedly stated that she and Porel had been in a relationship for around three years and alleged that he later failed to honour his promise of marriage.

The matter reached the Calcutta High Court after the complaint was filed. On July 20, the court ordered the police to arrest Porel. Following the order, authorities took the cricketer into custody and also seized his mobile phone. The seizure was reportedly intended to prevent the circulation of photographs of the complainant.

Porel has been booked under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act, according to the report. The charges mentioned in connection with the case include rape, sexual assault and criminal intimidation.

The allegations are currently part of an ongoing legal investigation, and Porel has not been convicted of any offence. The court proceedings and investigation will determine the facts of the case.

Porel is an established domestic and franchise cricketer. He has represented Bengal in first-class cricket and has also played for Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League. He has made 32 first-class appearances and featured in 35 IPL matches.

The arrest comes at a difficult time for the young cricketer, whose career has continued to develop through domestic cricket and the IPL. With the investigation now underway, further legal proceedings are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the allegations.
