Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar has showered praise on the surprise box-office success Hanuman Ansh, describing the film as “pure cinematic magic” and calling it an important “case study” for the Indian film industry. The director’s appreciation comes after the small-budget spiritual drama achieved a remarkable turnaround at the box office despite opening with just Rs 10 lakh.
Directed by Vishal Chaturvedi, Hanuman Ansh was released in theatres on August 7, 2026. Within 24 days of its release, the film crossed the Rs 40 crore mark in India, emerging as one of the most unexpected success stories of the year.
Taking to X, Madhur Bhandarkar praised the film’s storytelling, direction and performances. He wrote that the theatrical experience felt like “pure cinematic magic” and noted that audiences remained completely engaged with the story.
Bhandarkar particularly appreciated director Vishal Chaturvedi’s work, describing his approach as honest and tender. He also praised Shobhinaw Satyaa for his portrayal of Neem Karoli Baba, saying the performance felt natural and flawless.
However, the filmmaker’s strongest observation was about what Hanuman Ansh represents for Bollywood. According to Bhandarkar, the film proves that strong conviction and powerful storytelling can overcome the absence of a major star cast and a massive production budget.
He described the film as a crucial case study for the entire Indian film industry, suggesting that its success offers an important lesson to filmmakers and producers who often depend heavily on star power, expensive promotions and large-scale production values.
The numbers behind Hanuman Ansh’s journey make the achievement even more impressive. According to the reported box-office figures, the film has collected Rs 40.13 crore net and Rs 47.33 crore gross in India so far. From an opening of only Rs 10 lakh to crossing Rs 40 crore, the film’s growth highlights the power of positive word-of-mouth and audience support.
Hanuman Ansh is a spiritual drama inspired by the life and teachings of Neem Karoli Baba, popularly known as Maharaj Ji. Shobhinaw Satyaa plays the revered spiritual figure, while Vihaan Shedge portrays Maharaj Ji at another stage of his life. The supporting cast includes Chandan Anand, Purnima Tiwari, Anil K. Rastogi and Gulshan Pandey.
With its unexpected commercial success and growing appreciation from the industry, Hanuman Ansh has become more than just a box-office winner. As Madhur Bhandarkar pointed out, the film could serve as a powerful reminder that compelling stories, sincere filmmaking and audience connection can still create blockbuster results7
