Auqib Nabi Signs Short-Term Deal with Surrey for Three Championship Games
Indian fast bowler Auqib Nabi has become the latest player from India to secure a county cricket opportunity after signing a short-term deal with Surrey. The 29-year-old pacer will be available for Surrey’s next three County Championship fixtures against Yorkshire, Sussex and Glamorgan.
Surrey confirmed Nabi’s arrival as the club looks to strengthen its bowling resources during a demanding phase of the County Championship season. The London-based side faces a challenging schedule, with six matches to be played in six weeks and limited recovery time between games.
Alec Stewart, Surrey’s Director of Men’s Cricket, explained that the heavy workload and international commitments had forced the club to add more depth to its bowling department. He said the team was looking forward to welcoming Nabi and giving him the opportunity to contribute during the Championship run-in.
The move comes after an outstanding period in Nabi’s domestic career. The fast bowler played a major role in Jammu and Kashmir’s historic Ranji Trophy triumph, helping the side win its maiden title. Nabi finished the campaign with an impressive 60 wickets and was named Player of the Tournament for his consistent performances.
His remarkable domestic form also earned him a lucrative IPL contract with Delhi Capitals for the 2026 season. Nabi featured in five matches during the tournament, further enhancing his reputation as one of India’s promising fast-bowling options.
The pacer also recently represented India A and earned a place in the senior Indian Test squad for the Sri Lanka series. He was selected as Jasprit Bumrah’s replacement, although he did not make his international debut during the tour.
Nabi expressed his excitement after completing the move to Surrey, describing it as an honour to join one of England’s leading county clubs. He said he was eager to learn from the group and hoped to make a valuable contribution over the next three matches.
For Surrey, the signing could provide an important boost as they attempt to improve their position in the Division One standings. The club, which won three consecutive County Championship titles from 2022 to 2024, currently finds itself in eighth place.
The three-match spell will give Nabi a valuable opportunity to test his skills in English conditions while also gaining experience in one of the world’s most competitive domestic cricket competitions. His performances for Surrey could further strengthen his case for future opportunities at the international level.
