Can India Still Reach WTC Final? Harsha Analyses

India’s hopes of reaching the 2027 World Test Championship (WTC) Final are still alive, but the equation has become much tougher after the disappointing draw against Sri Lanka in Colombo.

India entered the second Test with a chance to strengthen their position after winning the first Test in Galle by 165 runs. However, despite declaring at 503/9 and bowling Sri Lanka out for 290 in the first innings, India could not force victory. Sri Lanka’s determined resistance on the final day resulted in a draw.

The result leaves India fifth in the WTC standings with a 51.52% points percentage. Australia currently lead the table with 80%, followed by South Africa at 75%, New Zealand at 72.22% and Bangladesh at 55.56%.

So, can India still make the final? Absolutely — but they have very little room for error.

India have seven Tests remaining in the current WTC cycle. They will first travel to New Zealand for a two-Test series before hosting Australia for five Tests. According to the current qualification calculations, India need to win at least six of their remaining seven matches to put themselves in a strong position for a top-two finish.

This makes the New Zealand series especially important. A defeat there would put enormous pressure on the five-match Australia series. On the other hand, winning both Tests in New Zealand would give India a major boost before the crucial home series.

Harsha Bhogle’s analysis is likely to focus on the bigger picture: India are not out of the race, but they now need consistency rather than isolated wins. The team must convert strong positions into victories and avoid another missed opportunity.

The encouraging sign is that India have shown the ability to dominate Test matches. The challenge is doing it consistently across the remaining seven games.

In short, India still have a realistic path to the WTC Final. But from here, every Test matters, and six wins from seven could be the benchmark for keeping their final hopes firmly alive.
