Ajinkya Rahane’s cricket career was built not only on talent, but also on grit, humility, discipline and an unwavering desire to improve. From travelling nearly two hours from Dombivli to Mumbai’s Azad Maidan for school cricket to representing India 195 times across formats, Rahane’s journey reflects the value of persistence.
As a young cricketer, Rahane regularly travelled in crowded suburban trains, carrying separate tiffin boxes for breakfast and lunch. His former mentors remember him as a quiet, sincere and highly focused youngster who was determined to make something of himself.
Former India spinner Nilesh Kulkarni was among the early figures who recognised Rahane’s potential. He remembers a shy but firm-minded player who was always eager to learn. That attitude remained a defining feature throughout Rahane’s career.
One of the clearest examples of his willingness to improve came during his early Mumbai career. After dropping several catches, Rahane approached Kulkarni to understand what he was doing wrong. The 2020-21 Australia tour particularly highlighted his leadership qualities.
