Teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi announced his arrival on the international stage in style by scoring his maiden half-century for India during the first T20I against Zimbabwe in Harare on Thursday. The 15-year-old prodigy reached his fifty in just 18 balls, showcasing his fearless stroke play with 4 boundaries and 4 towering sixes.

Although his entertaining knock came to an end immediately after reaching the milestone, as he was dismissed by Richard Ngarava on the very next delivery, Sooryavanshi had already provided India with a flying start in their chase. His explosive innings further strengthened his reputation as one of the brightest young talents in world cricket.

Harare has become a memorable venue for the youngster. Earlier this year, during the Under-19 World Cup, Sooryavanshi produced a remarkable 175 off 80 balls against England in the final, an innings that helped India lift the title and brought him into the national spotlight.

The left-handed batter made his senior India debut during the T20I series against England after replacing Sanju Samson in the second match. He featured in three consecutive games, scoring 14, 13, and 15, but was replaced by Samson for the final T20I. Despite India’s disappointing 4-0 series defeat, selectors retained faith in the youngster, especially with Samson unavailable for the Zimbabwe tour.

With another opportunity at the top of the order, Sooryavanshi grabbed it with both hands and delivered a memorable performance that could cement his place in India’s T20 plans for the future.

Earlier in the match, India’s pace attack laid the foundation for victory by restricting Zimbabwe to 125/7. Speedster Mayank Yadav impressed with figures of 2/18, dismissing Brian Bennett for a duck and later removing Dion Myers. Prince Yadav also claimed 2/19, including the crucial wicket of opener Ben Curran. Zimbabwe’s captain Sikandar Raza also fell cheaply as the hosts collapsed to 32/4 before recovering slightly through the middle overs.

The match also marked the international debut of fast bowler Ashok Sharma. Additionally, India introduced designated concussion substitutes for the first time in T20Is, naming Suryansh Shedge, Prabhsimran Singh, Harsh Dubey, and Yash Thakur as role-specific replacements.

Sooryavanshi’s explosive fifty, combined with India’s disciplined bowling performance, gave the visitors the perfect start to the three-match T20I series.
